Tour the Carl Maston–designed Susman House in Ventura, CA: an oceanfront 1984 modernist retreat on Faria Beach, listed for $5.1 million.
A three-bedroom seaside sanctuary perched high above a sandy cove at Faria Beach in Ventura, CA, has hit the market for $5.1 million, marking its first listing since it was built in 1984.
Known as The Susman House, the 2,640-square-foot residence was commissioned by former actress Tracy "Babs" Susman and designed by modernist architect Carl Maston, who also designed Dakota Johnson's home.
"The house was built by the current owner, who purchased the property in 1981 and spent a lot of time on this coast growing up," said Shannon Menzel, who co-lists the property with Chuck Menzel of The Menzel Group. "It was a lifelong dream to purchase it, and she has maintained it impeccably. It’s completely original and super modern."

Brick details, exposed beams, vaulted ceilings, built-ins, cedar-clad walls, and retractable glass doors further define the home’s timeless modernist aesthetic.
A double-sided fireplace anchors the cozy living area, complete with built-in window seating.
The sun-drenched kitchen features custom cabinetry, an original wood-slat ceiling, modern appliances, and oversized windows that capture the spectacular ocean views.

"The seller would care for everything in this home like it’s a piece of art," Shannon noted.
Upstairs, an airy primary suite boasts vaulted ceilings, floor-to-ceiling glass, a fireplace, a soaking tub, and access to a private deck overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
"I think the condition of the home has been maintained so well over the years," she added. "It’s just so beautiful."
The open floor plan is complemented by a floating staircase, custom brick flooring, and exposed wood beams, reinforcing the home’s distinctive architectural character.
"I think it has enough character that the next buyer will want to keep it much the same and not make too many changes," Chuck said. "I hope the next buyer falls in love with its architectural heritage, design, and the timelessness of it."
The home also includes a secondary suite with its own fireplace and a guest suite featuring a "clever" privacy divider.
Set on Mondo's Cove about an hour northwest of Los Angeles, the property offers views of the Channel Islands, access to private beach entry points, and use of a community tennis court.
"Along this coast, about 30 to 40 percent of the owners are permanent, full-time residents, so the majority are second homes," Chuck said.
"It’s a very sweeping cove that looks like it could be in Greece. It’s very private and quiet, with surf breaks everywhere. This cove always has sand in the summertime. It’s like Waikiki. It would be perfect for someone who wants to surf or have that surfing experience."
